Auld Reekie Roller Girls - Edinburgh 24th Jan 2009
A handfull (if you've had 2 fingers cut off) of memebrs made it to the Burns night Roller Derby between Celtic Caos and the Highland Heathens. A great day out! Davy, Ken and myself (Raymond) met at meadowbank and made our way in to a very busy hall 2. We were forced to sit in the front row (not the safest place to be as we were to find out). The action was fast and furious - the effort these girls put in is incredible. There were 'Gear Leader' strutting thier stuff and plenty of information about rules, scores and scoring. It should be noted that the sin bin was well used! So the action was as you'd expect non stop. There was hardly any let up in the game with jams (scoring sessions) starting one after the other with only the briefest of interuptions to change players.
The Heathens turned out victorious winning by only a couple of point in 100 or so.
Afterwards, we headed down to the Studios for the rock Caleigh. Our very own Metal Ken was on the decks and did well with his very own mix of music (good job Ken). We were treated to a band we'd never seen before called Firebrand or something? Although quite heavy, they did do a whole set of their own stuff and were headed up by a hot rock chick - can't be bad.
We all stayed on for a while and enjoyed Retribution till about 12 before heading to the hills while we were still ahead (and relatively sober!).
Well done to our own Angie who was brilliant as Captain of the Celtic Caos and clearly one of the best skaters/pivots/blockers of the match - which I have to say was a very high standard. Everybody did really well but Ang did stand out a bit and was definately well in the same class as the London Girls who were guesting.
Watch out for an other visit along to a future bout.
